New Year's Celebration (Online Only)
Due to the Covid-19 surge and the Omicron variant, we have decided to hold our traditional New Year’s Eve celebration online, an offering to all of you in the Threefold Sangha. The Zen Center of Syracuse Hoen-ji will be your host.
The Zoom meeting will include a Personal Purification Ceremony, zazen, the Shukushin (special New Year’s chanting), and a teisho at 9 p.m. by Shinge Roshi. Then the large gong will be struck and Kanzeon chanted 108 times. We will gather for informal conversation and a toast at midnight.
For the Personal Purification Ceremony, please take a piece of paper and write down some behaviors and conditioned patterns you’d strongly like to eliminate. As you put your paper into the fire, recite the Verse of Purification. If you don’t have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, prepare a lit candle and place it over an upside-down cup or mug in a large bowl of water. The paper can be burned in the candle flame, and the ashes will safely fall into the water.
