Choka (morning service) begins at 9 a.m., followed by a period of zazen (meditation) and then MyoOn Maurine Stuart Roshi's memorial service with a recorded talk. MyoOn was one of Shinge Roshi’s teachers in the 1980's. Her book, Subtle Sound, edited by Shinge Roshi, is a wonderful introduction to our practice. MyoOn passed away in 1990. We'll conclude the morning with a short samu (work period).
Shinge Roshi will lead this memorial service for her teacher, who gave her lay ordination in 1985 and passed away in 1990. Shinge Roshi collected and edited Maurine’s talks for the book Subtle Sound: The Zen Teachings of Maurine Stuart, which is available for purchase in the Forman House.
Please wear tabi or clean white socks for the ceremony, which will be followed by zazen and dokusan.
