Zen Center of Syracuse is thrilled to co-sponsor a four-day visit with David Loy, a Buddhist scholar, writer and teacher. Loy speaks on how Buddhist teachings can help us rethink our relationship to the earth. He is one of the founding members of the Rocky Mountain Ecodharma Retreat Center, near Boulder, Colorado. He was also a guest and speaker at DBZ's 40th anniversary celebration in 2016. We hope you are able to join us at one or all of his appearances, which are free & open to the public.

  • Thursday, April 19, 6 - 9 pm, Meditation and Public Talk: Shinge Roshi and the Hoen-ji Sangha will be joining David Loy in a period of zazen at Syracuse University’s Watson Theater before his talk, which is titled "Does the Earth Belong to Us, or Do We Belong to the Earth?  Buddhism and the Ecological Challenge." Computer Assisted Real-Time Translation (CART) will be provided at this public lecture. Free parking available in Booth Garage, 400 Marshall St., if you tell the attendant you are going to the David Loy talk at Watson Theater.  Click here for directions to the garage.  Note: This event is in lieu of services at Hoen-ji for this evening.

  • Saturday, April 21, 11 am - 12:30 pm, Public Dialogue:  Loy and Onondaga Nation Clan Mother Freida Jacques, will talk together on the topic, "Buddhist and Indigenous Values and Perspectives on the Ecological Challenges Facing Us." Skä·noñh—Great Law of Peace Center, 6680 Onondaga Lake Pkwy, Liverpool, NY 13088.  Light vegetarian lunch provided at 12:30 by members of the Onondaga Nation.
