Alok Hsu Kwang-Han will create Zen Calligraphic Portraits for Sangha members and friends: individuals, couples, and/or families. The sessions are an hour and a half each and the price, which includes mounting the finished painting on a scroll in Shanghai and all shipping costs, is $1,500 for an individual; $2,000 for couples; and $2,000 plus $200 for each additional member for families. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Zen Center of Syracuse. Available times for these commissions are 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. that day.

5 The basic theme is “Only One Koan Matters—YOU!” This kind of portrait “serves as the portal to healing and awakening, and is regarded by many to be the most illuminating of my paintings,” he said. “Like any good koan, it expands our awareness and enriches our lives, by springing us from the prisons hardened by our minds. It brings us to be intimate with not-knowing, and ushers us home to presence and emptiness.”

To sign up for a portrait session, email admin@hoenji.org. Time slots will be reserved on a first-come, first served basis. Let us know which time slot you would like, then send or drop off a check within two days to the Zen Center. Checks should be made out to Alok Hsu Kwang-han, with time slot in the memo line.
